Our Crops
We grow a wide array of crops suited to our beautiful tropical climate and we continuously experiment with new crops and farming methods. Our primary crops include:
-
Coconut
Our premier crop grows on 1,000 acres of Silk Grass Farms farmland as well as partner farms who meet our Supplier Code of Conduct. We have a no-waste policy, processing every ounce of our precious coconuts, including the juice, meat, and husk. Our coconut products include coconut oil, water, drinking milk, culinary milk, and coconut cream. Coconut husks are transformed into coco peat [coir] bricks and are used as planting mediums, while coconut shells are transformed into soil amendments like biochar.

-
Citrus
We grow oranges, grapefruit, limes, and lemons on our family of farms using regenerative crop cycling to ensure the fruits are fresh, fragrant, flavorful, and juicy. Our fruits are selectively harvested and carefully transported to ensure the highest quality of juice. The citrus is used to produce 100% natural, cold-pressed juices, juice blends and citrus segments.
-
Cacao
The cacao flower is pollinated by the midge, an insect that resides in Belizean soil. While cacao is traditionally grown in shade, at Silk Grass Farms we prefer to grow our cacao in open plots intercropped with Mahogany and other native hardwoods. Our cacao pods are manually harvested and processed, then dried and fermented prior to shipping. All of our cacao beans are used to produce the richly flavored Tulakalum (“togetherness” in Mayan) single origin chocolate by premium French chocolate maker Valrhona.

-
Vanilla
Vanilla is a traditional Belizean crop. At SGF we grow thousands of Vanilla planifolia plants in a screen house equipped with a misting system. The vanilla flower is pollinated by a stingless bee known as Melipona beecheii. We currently have a meliponiary of seven hives and are working to increase this number. We propagate our own vanilla cuttings in a nursery section of the screen house.
-
Watermelon
At Silk Grass Farms we produce two varieties of watermelons in an experimental plot to create a sustainable growth model we can use and share with other Belizean farmers through our outreach program. Watermelons from SGF and partner farms from our Approved Suppliers List grow watermelons used to produce 100% pure, cold-pressed juices.
-
Honey
We proudly produce 200 gallons of honey from more than 50 hives strategically placed on our farms. The hives are mainly for pollination purposes; however, we also extract pure and rich honey as a bonus!
-
Avocado
We grow several local varieties of avocado on 100 acres, with a few more acres to plant. The avocado will be used to produce fresh fruit, segments and guacamole.
